"The rhythms and cycles of nature are intertwined with our rhythms and cycles. As children, we may have spent a great deal of time outdoors in the elements, playing on the earth or in the water and fully breathing the air around us. As adults we spend more time indoors and less in nature. In our later years, we need to balance the time we spend indoors and outdoors to come fully into our own rhythm.
'
Nature's rhythm is medium to slow. Few creatures move rapidly in nature unless they are in danger. Many of us live in the fast lane, out of nature's rhythm. There are two things we can never do in the fast lane: we can neither deepen our experience nor integrate it, both essential tasks in the second half of life. Silence and nature foster an environment in which we can do this work and nurture our spirit."
