Sweet Surrender

Reading from Tuesday, October 7, 2014 yoga class

Anyone who knows me, or that has come to my yoga classes for any length of time, knows that I LOVE John Denver.  On Sunday, October 12, 2014, it will be 17 years since he died, tragically, in an airplane crash.  Here's the words and an explanation of how he came to write the song, "Sweet Surrender"

"The song was written for a Walt Disney movie called The Bears and I.  It is about a young Vietnam vet coming back from the war and going to settle some things for his father and a friend who had been in the Marines with him and had been killed.  I believe we are all on the same path.  It takes many different forms, is found in many different places, but we're all on the same path.  Joy, really, is in surrendering to what life has to offer.  So surrender--not without purpose.  It's not giving up or succumbing--it's taking steps yourself, it's moving forward and not sitting around and waiting for something to happen.  Don't hold back because you're afraid of something.  Surrender--go for it and surrender."

SWEET SURRENDER

Lost and alone on some forgotten highway
Traveled by many, remembered by few
Lookin' for something that I can believe in
Lookin' for something that I'd like to do with my life

There's nothin' behind me and nothin' that ties me
To somethin' that might have been true yesterday
Tomorrow is open and right now it seems to be more
Than enough to just be here today

And I don't know what the future is holdin' in store
I don't now where I goin'. I'm not sure where I've been
There's a spirit that guides me, a light that shines for me
My life is worth the livin', I don't need to see the end

Sweet, sweet surrender
Live, live without care
Like a fish in the water
Like a bird in the air
