From a blog post by Anne Kertz Kernion
"Morgan and I were in the Pittsburgh airport, waiting to board a mid-day commuter flight to Newark, NJ. We took our spot in "Group 4" at the United gate, surrounded by very serious businesswomen and men, no one making eye contact, everyone busy on their phones or computers. Morgan wrapped her arms around my legs and began singing, "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" at the top of her 2 year old lungs. Not just once, but twice.
By the end of the first few lines, the Serious People in Suits couldn't ignore the little strawberry-blond balladeer, and one by one turned around and smiled at us. But Morgan was completely oblivious of the attention, singing confidently in a slow deliberate pace, loud as can be, breaking the poker-faced atmosphere one note at a time with her sweet song. When she was finished, a few people broke into enthusiastic applause, and nearly everyone smiled broadly as they turned and acknowledged her performance.
I continue trying to live by the human heart, to be "thankful for its tenderness, joys and fears." Isn't that really what life is all about? I shouldn't worry about being embarrassed, or being seen as "too sappy." "too forgiving," "too silly." Even though these qualities aren't always encouraged, it's never too late to nourish their development. I hope you can find opportunities for some silliness and tenderness."
