Open and close doors

Reading from March 11, 2014 yoga class

I buy greeting cards online from a place called "Cards by Anne."  She sends out newsletters every once in a while and what follows is from a recent newsletter.

"Humility is what keeps us real--we don't overestimate our strengths, but recognize what gifts we have and use them to serve others.  To evaluate not WHAT we do, but the WAY we perform our daily tasks.

                                                                                                          St. Benedict

A story that Thomas Merton told:
He asks one of the novices what he had learned during his fist year of living as a monk--expecting to hear stories of enlightenment and discoveries of the spirit--what he heard was this: "I learned to open and close doors."

So--each act of opening and closing a door can remind us to live in this awareness, to pay attention to the way we are living."
