The right thing to do

Reading from Tuesday and Wednesday June 30 and July 1, 2015 yoga classes

The following was a letter to the editor in the Louisville Courier Journal submitted by Naomi Sipe who lives in Louisville.

"Around 8:45 Wednesday as I was downtown stopped on Third Street at the Broadway intersection, I noticed a woman in a wheelchair stuck in the middle of Broadway crosswalk as she was trying to get across.  There were cars continuing to drive by down Broadway, pulling out to get around her and on their way.  Meanwhile, she seemed frozen there in the midst of it all.

I felt a bit frozen myself, concerned and unsure of how to help her without abandoning my car with my child in the back seat.  Then, a man stopped right in the middle of the intersection.  Got out of his car, obviously dressed for his day at the office, and pushed her across Broadway and then across Third Street to safety.  He got back in his Audi and drove on his way.

I found myself overwhelmed with emotion.  I wanted to get out of my car and hug this man.  I wanted to tell him that what he did made a difference...to that woman; but also to me and, more important, to my son who was watching it all, too.

Too often, I find that I have to explain things to my children when they see people doing the "wrong" thing.  I told my son, and I want to tell that man, "THAT was the right thing to do!" and we saw you and it mattered."

WHOA... when I first read this letter the tears just rolled down my face.  I was unsure I would be able to read it to class without crying, but I made it.  SUCH a powerful letter.  That man is a yogi!!!   Thank you Naomi for sharing this.  It was the right thing to do and it mattered.
